It can predict when and where crimes might happen

  DUBAI – The Dubai police office has created an analytical system that can foresee when and where crimes might occur, making it the first of its kind in the Gulf region and Middle East. Brig. Kamel Al Suwaidi, Dubai police director for operations, said the tool will aid Dubai police in fighting crime effectively and increase police presence in crime-prone areas. Al Suwaidi said they started working on the system in 2014. It uses algorithm based on various international police organizations' research on crime for the past 20 years. "We designed it based on our needs and specifications and using our own sources of information and data. It is the first of its kind," he added. The Dubai police on Tuesday showed how the system retrieves and analyzes crime data by using the Mirdif area as an example. There were 2,630 crimes in that area within a three-month period last year, 29 of which were theft incidents. By using such data, the police identified the next possible area of crime and the prediction was proven accurate after an incident was reported near where the system said a crime would occur, said Al Suwaidi.
