Dubai police reveal key evidence in journalist's murder case

  DUBAI - Evidence that a British journalist killed his wife in their Umm Suqueim home was in his dark blue suit, a Dubai Police official told the court. The hearing in case of Gulf News' former editor Francis Mathew, 61, continued on Sunday, with more details revealed on the expat's murder case. Mathew's wife, Jane, was found dead in their Umm Suqueim home on July 4. Her body was found in the couple's bed, soaked in blood and bearing severe blows to the head. Investigation revealed that Mathews hit her on the head twice with a hammer. He initially denied killing her, but later admitted to the crime, saying that the couple had marital disputes prior to the gruesome attack. At his trial, Mathew has denied the charge of intentionally killing his wife. On Sunday, a Dubai Police officer who examined the murder scene said there was no doubt that Mathew killed his spouse despite initially telling police that burglars may have attacked her.   “The suspect initially claimed to me that after he spotted his wife on the bed, he tried to lift her blood-covered body to check if she was still alive. Based on his claims, his dark-blue suit should have had some blood stains. However, when I examined it using the ultraviolet light, the analysis confirmed that the suit had not been stained by the victim’s blood. That was when the 61-year-old became surrounded by suspicions that he had killed her,” the officer told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi. The officer recounted that Mathew told police that he left the villa to go to work at 8am and then returned home at around 5pm to find his wife dead. A forensic expert, fingerprints expert, biological expert and K9s examined the scene, the police officer said. "The dead woman’s fingers of one hand were clutched together and couldn’t be opened... There were no bloodstains on his suit that would corroborate his initial claims that he lifted up her body off the bed. The ultraviolet light analysis confirmed that his suit wasn’t stained and that’s when and how we started suspecting him,” he said.
