Dubai Police has confiscated 1,780 bicycles and scooters in a sweeping campaign aimed at improving road and pedestrian safety. The campaign, carried out in collaboration with the Al Rifa’a Police Station, targeted violations in non-designated areas, including public roads and pedestrian pathways, which posed risks to both riders and the community. During the operation, authorities seized 1,417 bicycles and 363 electric scooters while issuing 251 fines for infractions such as not wearing helmets, disregarding traffic signals, and failing to equip vehicles with essential safety features like reflective vests and lights. “Our aim is to enhance safety for all road users. Improper use of bicycles and scooters in undesignated areas creates dangerous situations that must be addressed,” a Dubai Police spokesperson said. The authority emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines, which include using designated bike lanes, wearing protective gear, and equipping vehicles with front and rear lights. Riders were also urged to dismount and walk their bicycles across pedestrian crossings and avoid overloading vehicles or towing others. Community members welcomed the initiative. “This is a much-needed move. I’ve seen too many close calls with scooters on pedestrian paths,” J.B. Acuna, a Dubai resident, told Expat Media.
