Dubai Police has issued a fresh warning against jaywalking after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross from an undesignated area on Al Khawaneej Street. The incident happened recently and left the pedestrian with minor injuries, according to authorities. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene and provided immediate medical assistance on-site. On Wednesday (April 29), Dubai Police used the incident to remind residents that crossing roads outside designated pedestrian areas remains one of the leading causes of run-over accidents in the emirate. Brigadier Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said authorities have made extensive efforts to improve pedestrian safety by installing well-equipped crossings and footbridges on major roads. Despite these measures, some pedestrians continue to take dangerous risks by crossing roads in unsafe locations, particularly on high-speed roads where drivers may not be able to stop in time, he said. Brig. Suwaidan urged pedestrians to use only designated crossings, obey traffic signals, and make sure roads are clear before attempting to cross. Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, pedestrians who cross from non-designated areas or ignore traffic signals face a Dh400 fine. Dubai Police also warned that penalties become significantly harsher when jaywalking results in an accident. Pedestrians who cause an accident may face fines of up to Dh10,000 and possible jail time. For violations on roads where the speed limit is 80km/h or higher, the minimum penalty includes three months in prison and/or a Dh10,000 fine. ICA/Expat Media
