Dubai authority puts price cap on face masks, sanitizers, grocery items
DUBAI – The Dubai Economy has capped the prices of face masks and sanitizers amid consumer complaints of traders overpricing the items during the coronavirus pandemic. In its Price Monitor launched on Wednesday, the authority indicated that face masks may only be sold between Dh1.61 and Dh1.96 per piece, while hand sanitizers can be sold between Dh5.25 per piece, to a maximum of Dh27. Consumers have complained about overpricing of the items in certain shops after authorities and health officials recommended their use as a health precaution. Dubai resident Vhon Ghi said he was able to buy a 50-piece box of face masks for only Dh15 one month ago, but that the same item is now being sold for Dh90. Another resident, Mylie Enriquez, said that in February she was able to buy a box of 50 face masks at a pharmacy in Jumeirah for only Dh14. The same item is reportedly being sold at close to Dh100 in other shops. The Dubai Economy said it has launched the Price Monitor to publish the daily price list of essentials with the minimum and maximum price, “empowering consumers further during the COVID-19 alert period”. The Price Monitor also covers essential grocery items. 3 pharmacies fined
Earlier this week, three pharmacies in Dubai were fined for overpricing face masks and sanitizers, according to the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector at Dubai Economy. The pharmacies are located in Jumeirah, Al Khawaneej and Mirdif. Authorities conducted an investigation following complaints from consumers. According to the CCP, two of the pharmacies were found to have inflated the price of face masks, while the third pharmacy sold sanitizers at a higher price and without proper invoice. “A repeat offense would attract double the fines and may lead to closing down the outlet,” the CCP warned. Consumers can report any price manipulation or negative practice to Dubai Economy through the call centre number 600 54 5555, the Dubai Consumer app, or on the Consumer Rights website.
