Recycling Center in Dubai. SUPPLIED

Got a bunch of old batteries, cardboard boxes, or clothes you don’t need anymore? Instead of tossing them into the trash, why not recycle them at Dubai Municipality’s Smart Sustainability Oasis (SSO)? These handy recycling centres are dotted all over the city, making it super easy and totally free to do your bit for the environment. Dubai is stepping up its recycling game with some fantastic new initiatives. Recently, Dubai Municipality has been pushing for more sustainable waste management. They’ve rolled out 100 smart plastic packaging containers to schools and other agencies to collect and recycle a whopping 60 tons of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic. Plus, they’ve set up 17 public collection centres in busy areas and installed smart plastic recovery devices at hotspots like the Dubai Municipal Building and Dubai Frame. The best part? These SSOs are open 24/7. Anytime you’ve got recyclables, you can drop them off, no hassle. From used batteries and cardboard to old clothes, these centres take it all. Even beachgoers can get in on the action, with special plastic packaging containers placed at ten beach locations to encourage responsible waste disposal. These recycling centres accept a whole range of household items, including electronics, plastics, paper, glass, and textiles. It’s an easy way to make a big impact. One cool aspect of the initiative is using recycled plastic bottles to create uniforms for municipal sanitation workers. Talk about turning trash into treasure! Getting started is a breeze. Just find your nearest SSO—Dubai Municipality has made sure they’re easy to get to. Make a habit of dropping off your recyclables and spread the word to your friends and neighbours. The more, the merrier! These efforts are part of Dubai’s commitment to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goal and the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041. The aim is to slash the carbon footprint by improving recycling and waste management. Programs like Every Can Counts are also boosting aluminium can recycling, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and saving energy. MKQ/Expat Media
