Dubai residents help police catch traffic violators; more than 38,000 violations were reported by residents, records show

  DUBAI - Residents of Dubai have been helping the law enforcers catch traffic violators. Records of the Dubai Police's "We Are All Police" program showed 80,710 traffic violations registered between January and November, of which 28,180 were caught by cameras; 52,280 by policemen and 38,163 with the help of citizens. Col. Said Muhair Al Mazroui, director of Dubai traffic police, said the program allows citizens to report traffic violations through a mobile phone app or by calling the toll-free number 901. "This channel has given residents an avenue to bring to authorities any violation by motorists, which could be putting their lives or of others at risk on the road," said Al Mazroui. He also said the highest number of fines on erring motorists were issued last May when there were 9,150 violations committed. But Mazroui said they do not mete fines on motorists right away when they receive a complaint from a resident. He explained that when a motorist is informed by the police of his or her violation as reported by a citizen, the police will check whether the violator was on the same road where the offense was committed. Also, if the driver is the subject of more than one complaint of similar nature, a fine is issued.
