Did you know you can get fined or even have your vehicle seized for riding your e-scooter or bicycle at pedestrian crossings in Dubai? According to the Dubai Police, this is one of the common violations that officers spotted during the traffic safety campaign targeting e-scooter riders and cyclists in Dubai this July. The campaign led to a total of 640 bicycles and e-scooters being impounded. Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs, said that the bicycles and scooters were impounded after their riders committed numerous dangerous violations. Al Ghaithi said cyclists and e-scooter riders were flagged for not dismounting while crossing pedestrian crossings. Riding a bicycle or e-scooter while at the pedestrian crossing is considered reckless behavior. The rider must dismount from their vehicle and cross the pedestrian crossing on foot. Other violations that caused the impoundment of bicycles and e-scooters this July included traveling against the flow of traffic and biking on roads with speed limits over 60 km/h, Al Ghaithi said. The first violation leads to a Dh200 fine, while speeding is punishable with a Dh300 fine. Failing to wear the required safety vest and helmet is also a violation. Al Ghaithi stressed that bicyclists and e-scooter riders must wear a proper helmet and reflective jacket, especially when biking near highways, and also install bright white front and red rear light reflectors. Al Ghaithi said that riding a bike in a manner that endangers the rider or others also results in an Dh300 penalty. Meanwhile, carrying a passenger on an e-scooter is subject to a Dh300 fine.
