Dubai royal weddings: 8 things to know

  DUBAI – All eyes will be in Dubai on Thursday (June 6) as three big royal weddings of the sons of the Dubai ruler are set to happen at the busiest convention centre in the emirates. Here’s all we know so far:

Who are getting married?

Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed, and brothers Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed, Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, will have their official wedding celebration following a private Islamic wedding ceremony in May. Sheikh Hamdan married Sheikha Sheikha bint Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum; Sheikh Maktoum married Sheikha Maryam bint Butti Al Maktoum; and Sheikh Ahmed married Sheikha Midya bint Dalmouj Al Maktoum.

When is the triple wedding celebration?

The wedding celebrations are scheduled to start at 4pm at the Dubai World Trade Centre on June 6 (Thursday).

Any hints on the programme?

Everything has been kept under wraps, with only the gold-laced wedding invitations that went viral on social media and a lit up Dubai Palace the only few indications that the royal weddings are set to happen. It is definitely going to be a busy affair, with thousands of guests expected to arrive in Dubai by private jet, helicopter and limousine. There is also likely a big musical production, with a few World Trade Centre employees reporting that they heard grand music playing during sound check at the venue on Tuesday night.

What happens during an Emirati wedding?

There is usually a separate celebration for men and women, which can be held at the same venue but in two different halls. The women’s celebration is thought to be more elaborate, with women dressed in their grandest gowns. The men’s celebration will feature an Emirati traditional folk dance called Ayala. Later in the night, the bride and groom will then cut the cake and drink juice or rosewater together. The entire ceremony can last for more than four hours.

Organisers working in secret at night

Sources say wedding organisers have been working in secret at night. Containers have been brought in each night at the Dubai World Trade Centre since three weeks ago to prepare for the nuptials. There isn't much detail available yet on the interior decor as no one is allowed to bring a mobile phone or camera at the venue. However, there is reportedly a big stage built in one of the halls, which is closely guarded by Dubai Police.

Tight security

Security gates have been put up around the hall’s entry doors. Four large sniffer dogs were also reportedly brought to the wedding hall venue ahead of the Emirati wedding.

Will the wedding be broadcast live?

There will be no live broadcast of the wedding, nor photos of the bride. The evening will be an exclusive affair for the royals and hundreds of guests.

Who are invited?
