Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced AI-driven monitoring systems to detect smoking in taxis as part of its latest initiative to enhance passenger comfort and safety. This move aligns with RTA’s vision for a sustainable and clean transport environment. Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, explained that the new system uses in-car cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to identify smoking inside vehicles. “This is part of our efforts to promote vehicle cleanliness and ensure a safer, more comfortable journey for passengers,” Shakri said. Under the UAE’s federal traffic law, smoking inside public transport, public facilities or public services is punishable with a fine of Dh200. Meanwhile, more than 500 airport taxis have been equipped with high-quality air fresheners during a pilot phase. Additionally, the RTA has intensified inspection campaigns and introduced a monthly operational index to evaluate vehicle and driver cleanliness. “These initiatives not only align with Dubai’s vision for a cleaner environment but also underscore RTA’s commitment to innovation and excellence,” Shakri added. Customer satisfaction surveys and mystery shopper assessments will also be conducted semi-annually starting in 2025 to gauge the impact of these measures. The AI monitoring system complements existing programs like driver training and awareness campaigns about maintaining vehicle hygiene. By leveraging technology, RTA aims to set a global standard for public transport services. ICA/Expat Media ALSO READ: 31 Dubai public transport violations to avoid
