Traveling between Dubai and Sharjah on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road will soon be quicker by 12 minutes when a Dh374 million project is completed. This will be possible when the Garn Al Sabkha Street-Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is completed. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently awarded the contract for the road improvement project that covers the construction of four bridges capable of serving 17,600 vehicles per hour. “This project is part of a larger initiative to improve Garn Al Sabkha Street Corridor; that connects Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads. Its goal is to guarantee that traffic flows smoothly between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of RTA. The project will reduce peak hour travel time from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes once completed, Al Tayer said. According to the RTA official, the road improvement project will reduce the travel time by 40 per cent between Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah. It will also reduce travel time from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port by 70 percent.
