Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. ARCHIVE
Dubai’s bustling Sheikh Zayed Road will close for brief periods on two upcoming dates in November, as part of the city’s commitment to promoting fitness and community engagement. The closures will coincide with two major annual events—Dubai Ride on November 10 and Dubai Run on November 24—both integral to the Dubai Fitness Challenge, a citywide initiative encouraging active lifestyles. The closures are not full-day interruptions; instead, motorists can expect Sheikh Zayed Road to be shut down for a few hours during the morning to accommodate event participants. Dubai Ride, scheduled on November 10, invites cyclists of all skill levels to pedal along this iconic highway. To allow for the safe passage of riders, the road will be temporarily closed, with participants required to finish their ride by 8:15am, ensuring the road is reopened to traffic shortly after. Two weeks later, Sheikh Zayed Road will close once again in the early morning for Dubai Run on November 24. This annual event offers runners the rare opportunity to jog through the city’s central highway, with the 5km route beginning near the Museum of the Future and ending near Dubai Mall, while the 10km route crosses the Dubai Canal Bridge and finishes near the DIFC Gate. Runners will start in waves, with the last wave expected to leave by 8am, allowing for a timely reopening of the road for regular traffic. Event organizers have arranged for Dubai Metro services to continue operating on these mornings, ensuring alternative transport options for commuters. Residents and visitors are encouraged to use public transit or plan alternate routes to avoid the closures. With thousands of participants anticipated, Sheikh Zayed Road’s temporary transformation into a pedestrian and cyclist haven is expected to bring an exciting visual spectacle to the city. Free to enter, both Dubai Ride and Dubai Run are highlights of the Dubai Fitness Challenge and offer a unique, family-friendly experience. The 4km family route for Dubai Ride runs through Downtown Dubai, while the 12km cycling route offers scenic views along Sheikh Zayed Road. Dubai Run’s routes feature famous landmarks like Burj Khalifa, Dubai Opera, and the Museum of the Future, promising a memorable event for all involved. Last year’s Dubai Run saw the full closure of Sheikh Zayed Road between Trade Centre Roundabout and the 2nd Interchange, a temporary shift that drew thousands of fitness enthusiasts to the streets. For those planning to join this year, registration details and event guidelines are available on the Dubai Fitness Challenge website.
