Dubai’s fascination with unique number plates reached new heights as the “super plate” BB 88 sold for a staggering Dh14 million at the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) latest open auction. The sale took place on Saturday (September 27), at the Grand Hyatt Dubai Hotel during the RTA’s 119th premium plate auction, which generated nearly Dh98 million in total revenue. Following BB 88, plate Y 31 fetched Dh6.27 million, while plates M 78 and BB 777 each sold for Dh6 million. In total, 90 plates featuring two, three, four, and five digits across multiple codes — including AA, BB, K, L, M, N, P, Q, T, U, V, W, X, and Y — went under the hammer. The sale of premium plates continues to be a hallmark of Dubai’s luxury culture, with bidders vying for plates that carry both prestige and personal significance. To participate, bidders were required to hold a Dubai traffic file, submit a Dh25,000 security cheque, and pay a non-refundable entry fee of Dh120. The plates are also subject to a 5 percent VAT. “These auctions embody RTA’s strategy of transparency and equal opportunities for all participants,” an RTA spokesperson said, adding that both open and online formats have been successful in attracting wide interest. The popularity of unique number plates has made Dubai one of the world’s most vibrant markets for such sales, with past auctions also recording multi-million-dirham purchases.
