Victim knocked out cold after punch on the face in row at Dubai Marina

  DUBAI – The Dubai Court of First Instance has meted a three-month suspended sentence on a Nepalese taxi driver for beating a fellow cabbie and causing permanent disability on the latter in the scuffle. In the incident that happened in February at the Dubai Marina, the 29-year-old defendant refused to give way to the 26-year-old Pakistani cabbie when the latter tried to move his vehicle into a taxi queue. Court records said the Pakistani cab driver parked his vehicle on the side of the road and went to the washroom. When he returned, the Nepalese cabbie had blocked the Pakistani driver's way and did not allow him to move into the taxi queue. The Pakistani driver asked the Nepalese cabbie to give way but the latter refused, alighted from his taxi and went over to the Pakistani driver to confront him. The Nepalese defendant tried to forcibly open the door of the taxi driven by the Pakistani but the latter held on to it and pushed away the Nepalese. The Nepalese then punched the Pakistani cabbie, causing the latter to lose consciousness. As a result of the blow, the Pakistani cabbie suffered a bruise in the eye and cheek and constant sinus infection as shown by medical records. The Nepalese admitted punching the Pakistani driver but claimed it was an act of self defense. The court, however, convicted the Nepalese taxi driver of assaulting the Pakistani cabbie and causing him permanent disability. Citing grounds of leniency, the court imposed a three-month suspended sentence. The Nepalese has appealed the court's ruling before the appellate tribunal.
