DUBAI – Fifty-three taxi drivers in Dubai were rewarded cash prizes totaling Dh360,000 in the recent Traffic Safety Awards. The awards by the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is in recognition of drivers who have shown excellent service. The Traffic Safety Awards was launched nine years ago and has since helped reduce traffic accidents and injuries involving Dubai taxis. The awards have three categories: the Gold Category with prize money of Dh5,000; and the Silver and Bronze categories with purses of Dh4,000 and Dh3,000 respectively. All winners also get certificates of appreciation. In addition, monthly rewards are also given to safe taxi drivers, with about Dh2 million allocated each year for the rewards. The rewards include airline tickets for their spouses. “The award had reduced the traffic incidents and injuries rate in 2018 by 7% compared with 2017 judged by the assessment of 1.1 billion km done by taxis involving about 47.7 million journeys made by more than 5,000 vehicles driven by about 11,000 drivers," said DTC CEO Yousef Al Ali. Al Ali said that new programmes are being developed to train drivers and offer them all-round training before deploying them to service as DTC ambassadors.
