Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approves Dubai’s rainwater drainage network project.

Dubai is building a rain drainage network that will cost Dh30 billion, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced on Monday (June 24). The project is expected to increase Dubai’s capacity of rainwater drainage by 700 percent, said the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed said that construction will start immediately, with the Dubai-wide project expected to be completed in 2033. It is poised to become the largest rainwater drainage network in the region. The Dubai ruler added that the network will enhance Dubai’s readiness to face future climate challenges and will serve the city for the next hundred years. The announcement comes after unprecedented rain caused widespread flooding in the UAE in April and May, disrupting business and transport facilities. ICA/Expat Media
