Dubai tourist awarded for reporting illegal taxi driver

DUBAI – A British tourist in Dubai has been honoured for helping authorities arrest an unlicensed taxi driver who swindled her on a ride from the Dubai International Airport. Newly arrived in Dubai, the woman was looking for a taxi when she was approached by a driver who offered her a ride to her hotel in Bur Dubai. Unaware that he was offering an illegal service, she accepted the ride but was charged an exorbitant fee. “She noted that the fare was so high, when compared to a similar fare in London, and reported the matter to the hotel management," said Mohammed Nabhan, director of Passenger Transport Activities Monitoring at RTA’s Public Transport Agency. Nabhan on Friday said that authorities were able to track the driver within two hours. Under the UAE law, illegal transport of passengers is punishable by fines, impoundment of vehicle and deportation of the violator. “Violators are detected and arrested, and the vehicle used in recurrent offences is impounded. The driver’s permit will be abolished and recurrent violators will be subjected to administrative deportation,” Nabhan said.
