Three Bangladeshi in court for luring housemaids into prostitution

  DUBAI – Three Bangladeshi men are on trial over charges that they forced two absconding Indonesian housemaids into prostitution in Dubai. According to court records, two of the men, aged 24 and 40, first lured the Indonesians into absconding from work, promising them better paying jobs and picking them up from their workplace. The duo then sold one of the maids to a 35-year-old Bangladeshi plumber, who allegedly raped the maid, prosecutors told the Dubai Court of First Instance. The 33-year-old Indonesian testified in court that one of the Bangladeshis encouraged her to abscond from her work in Ras Al Khaimah and that they had gone to a hotel to have consensual sex. She told the court that she was taken to a house in Dubai where she saw another Indonesian woman and two Bangladeshi. "A man told me I was sold for Dh 4,000. He told me that I would work in prostitution or I have to return that amount," she testified, adding that she was kept captive for three months. She said that her captor also raped her and that she was only able to escape and report the matter to the Ras Al Khaimah Police after she was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Another Indonesian maid, 42, said she absconded with other housemaids and that the Bangladeshis “picked us up and took us to a motel” She was later told she would have to work as a prostitute. She was able to escape two days later while the men were asleep. During police interrogation, the Bangladeshi plumber admitted that he paid Dh1,500 to buy one of the maids, locked her up in a house in Al Hamriyah and confessed having sex with her twice.
