Housemaids on trial over theft at sheikha's palace in Dubai

  DUBAI – Two housemaids for a sheikha in Dubai are on trial over charges that they stole gold and other valuables from her palace. The Sri Lankan housemaids, aged 34 and 31, did not show up at the start of their trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday (August 9). The duo are at large. Their Egyptian supervisor told prosecutors that she discovered the theft after inspecting the maids' rooms. The Sri Lankan duo allegedly stole an unspecified number of gold items, jewellery and three iPhones. Their supervisor testified in court that she first noticed one of the housemaids "hiding something in her clothes" before rushing to her room. She followed the woman and saw her "hiding something in the false ceiling. When I checked that place, I discovered a set of gold and other jewellery hidden there. I also found three iPhones". According to court records, the housemaid admitted stealing the items, adding that another runaway housemaid helped them. A policeman told prosecutors that the duo alleged that the runaway maid was the one who stole the items.
