Dubai to turn into bicycle-friendly city

  DUBAI – Dubai will transform into a bicycle-friendly city following a new directive to create laws and systems to support safe cycling in the emirates, the Dubai Crown Prince said. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, said on Thursday (August 13) that more infrastructure will be built to support the project. “This directive is in line with the objectives of Dubai Vision 2021, which aims to enhance Dubai’s position as a preferred place to live and work and the safest place, and to fulfill the Dubai Traffic Strategy 2021 to reduce the percentage of deaths due to traffic accidents,” Sheikh Hamdan said. Read more The number of cycling tracks in Dubai are expected to double by 2022, with Downtown Dubai, Expo 2020 site and Jumeirah Beach among several locations that will have cycling tracks soon. The existing network of 250km of cycling tracks is set to grow to 300km by the end of 2020, with new plans to extend the tracks to 560km by 2022. The extended cycling tracks will pass through areas such as Al Warqa’a, Jumeirah Beach, Nad Al Sheba, Expo 2020 site, Downtown, Jebel Ali, Al Quoz, Al Karama, Oud Metha, Hor Al Anz, Al Ghusais and Al Barsha. “The RTA’s master plan includes providing dedicated cycling and running tracks covering the entire emirate, allowing people to use it as environment-friendly mobility means as well as fitness and recreational facilities,” Maitha Mohammad Bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said in a previous interview. There is also a plan to create a cycling track linking Al Mamzar to Jumeirah. Details of the proposed track have yet to be revealed. Over the last few years, the RTA has constructed 218km of cycling tracks, with a 32km track opening earlier this year in Mushrif, Mirdif and Al Khawaneej. The other areas with cycling tracks include Seih Assalam-Bab Al Shams-Al Qudra Street, Dubai Water Canal, Jumeirah Street, King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Street and Al Mankhool Street, Al Quoz 3, Al Rigga and Emirates metro station.
