Two cyclists shocked motorists and pedestrians after they were caught riding in the middle of Sheikh Zayed Road, one of the busiest highways in the UAE. A video of the incident, filmed near a Dubai Metro station and uploaded by netizen Delfin Cadag on Tuesday, has gone viral with nearly 200,000 views on Facebook alone. It shows the cyclists pedaling industrial bicycles on the Abu Dhabi-bound side of the highway, with vehicles speeding past at high velocity. Under the UAE’s federal traffic law, bicycles are strictly prohibited on roads with speed limits exceeding 60 km/h. Sheikh Zayed Road, depending on the stretch, has a speed limit of between 100 km/h and 120 km/h. Authorities have reminded the public that violating cycling regulations can lead to penalties, including bicycle confiscation for 30 days, fines, and in some cases, temporary bans from cycling. Repeat violations within a year carry stricter consequences. If the offender is under 18, their parent or legal guardian will be responsible for paying the fine. With the revised traffic law implemented this March, police now have the authority to arrest violators on the spot. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two cyclists have been apprehended.
