The Dubai Misdemeanor Court convicted an Asian driver in absentia to one year in jail, followed by deportation, and fined him Dh80,000 for exploiting his job to steal and sell a truck belonging to a general contracting company. The court also sentenced another man in attendance to one month in jail, followed by deportation, and fined him, jointly with the other defendant, Dh1.5 million. The case began in August of last year when an agent for a public transportation firm submitted a complaint alleging that a truck and its cargo worth Dh1.5 million had been stolen. The complaint alleged that the company manager informed him that communication was lost with the truck driver who had a shipment to deliver in Sharjah. The cargo, which contained copper cables belonging to a general contracting company, was handed over to the driver for delivery to a site following a contract negotiated with a transport company. However, the driver stole both the truck and the cargo. According to official documents, detectives tracked down the truck and stolen cables and apprehended the second suspect. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to purchasing the truck and its cargo from unknown people who had obtained them from the truck driver. He also admitted that he knew that the truck and the cargo had been stolen. BKM/ Expat Media
