Dubai has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its rail network with the launch of the new Dubai Metro Gold Line, a Dh34 billion project expected to serve more than 1.5 million residents. The announcement was made on Wednesday (April 22) by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, who described it as the city’s largest transportation project. “We are pleased to announce the largest transportation project in Dubai: a new 42-kilometre metro line,” Sheikh Mohammed said. “It will pass through 15 key strategic areas across the city, serve approximately 1.5 million residents, and strengthen connectivity to 55 major real estate developments currently under construction.” The new line will extend Dubai’s Metro network by about 25 percent and is scheduled to open on September 9, 2032. The Dubai Metro Gold Line will serve 18 stations and cover 15 key locations from Al Ghubaiba Interchange Station to Jumeirah Golf Estates Station. It will connect with the Red and Green Lines and integrate with Etihad Rail. It will also have the first fully integrated underground Metro route in Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed said the project reflects Dubai’s continued investment in future growth. “Our landmark projects to position Dubai as the world’s best city to live in are on track. Our future endeavours will not stop; rather, they will accelerate,” he said. The Gold Line is part of a broader push to improve connectivity and reduce road congestion as Dubai’s population continues to grow. It follows earlier plans for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which is expected to open in September 2029. That project will add 30km to the network, including 14 new stations connecting areas such as Mirdif, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai International City. Once completed, Dubai’s Metro network is expected to reach 131km, with 78 stations and 168 trains.
