In support of the UAE's ambitious mission to breathe new life into the planet's "green lung," an eco-friendly army of volunteers planted 5,000 mangroves in less than an hour in Dubai. More than 100 participants of New York University Abu Dhabi's community outreach program gathered at a scenic spot near Jebel Ali to contribute to the country's goal of planting 100 million more mangroves by 2030. This significant pledge was made during last year's Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow as part of the Emirates' continued efforts to promote the global green agenda. A collaboration between NYUAD Community Outreach and the Emirates Marine Environmental Group expanded Dubai's mangrove coverage. Mangroves help minimize carbon emissions while providing important natural habitats for fish and other sea creatures. The trees protect the UAE's coasts from rising sea levels and storms. The Emirates is already home to 60 million mangroves that form forests spanning 183 square kilometers and capture 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. BKM/ Expat Media
