Dubai: Woman loses Dh202,000 after investing in a bogus project

A woman lost Dh202,000 after being duped by a 43-year-old expat who convinced her to invest in a bogus project. The man was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison by the Dubai Misdemeanours Court. He was also asked to return the amount he seized. The suspect went to a bank to get a car loan for his wife and met the victim there. She was the employee in charge of assisting him in receiving the loan. The man then asked her to join him in a food trading venture. The victim declined the offer since she did not have enough money to invest. They talked about where the automobiles would come from and how much they would be worth after repairs. According to the woman, the man claimed to be a customs inspector. She went on to say that he promised to clear the vehicles swiftly upon import. The woman handed the money to the man after being told that the profits would be split among them. Months later, he gave her Dh5,000, turned off his phone, and disappeared. She then realized she had been duped and reported it to the police. The man was apprehended after the police organized an investigating team.
