  DUBAI - A 33-year-old Emirati woman is being tried in court to killing her 14-month-old son in their home in Al Qusais in July last year. The woman had beaten her son several times in the past, her Indonesian maid had testified in court. The defendant, however, was not present in the court hearing. The Indonesian maid said she saw the woman pressing on the baby stomach and the defendant only stopped when she saw the helper nearby. As a result of that incident on July 16 last year, the mother took the baby to the Saudi German Hospital for emergency treatment but the infant died. The doctors at the hospital alerted the police who then arrested the mother. An autopsy on the child showed that the boy succumbed to internal bleeding in the abdomen caused by violent pressure, which also damaged his intestines. The maid said the defendant would abuse the child. "She was treating the baby mercilessly, shoving the spoon into his mouth and throwing him on the bathroom floor naked to bathe him." The baby would also cry at night often but the mother would not calm him down and the only time the infant would not cry is when the father is home. The defendant's sister recalled seeing bruises on the infant's body. A doctor in a hospital where the baby had been brought for treatment in the past said the infant previously suffered brain hemorrhage, diarrhea and vomiting, fractured thigh bone and a fractured skull.
