The Zayed and Rashid Mural in Hatta Dam Waterfalls, Dubai. BRAND DUBAI

The world’s largest mosaic artwork, the Zayed and Rashid Mural, was unveiled at the Hatta Dam Waterfalls in a grand ceremony ahead of UAE National Day celebrations. The mural, spanning an impressive 2,198.7 square meters, honors the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the UAE’s founding fathers. The project was spearheaded by Brand Dubai, in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). It is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign, commemorating key national milestones, including the 53rd Eid Al Etihad. “This mural immortalizes the vision of our founding fathers and reinforces our commitment to preserving heritage while advancing sustainable development,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA. He noted the significance of Hatta as a platform to celebrate the UAE’s legacy while advancing sustainable development. Designed by Russian artist Sergey Korbasov, the mural utilized over 1.2 million handcrafted mosaic pieces, each measuring 5x5 cm, incorporating natural materials like rocks and soil from Hatta. The mural’s vibrant color palette draws inspiration from the traditional attire of the founding fathers, enhancing its historical depth.
The Russian artist worked with over 100 artisans from around the world to bring the vision to life. “We worked tirelessly for four months to complete this masterpiece,” Korbasov shared.
Set against the picturesque Hajar mountains, the mosaic forms part of the Dubai Street Museum initiative launched in 2016 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This public art project aims to enrich Dubai’s cultural landscape through impactful installations. ICA/Expat Media
