In celebration of the UAE's 25th National Day on December 2, 1996, Dubai baked its way into the record books with a colossal 2.5-kilometer-long date-flavored cake. Set along the Deira Creek, the mammoth dessert drew crowds from all walks of life, eager to taste a slice of history, former Dubai expat Hemant Maloor told Expat Media while sharing photos to reminisce the record-breaking event. One of the memorable aspects of the event was the rumor circulating that five keys to Mercedes Benz cars were hidden within the cake, sparking a frenzy as people tried to locate the prizes. However, none were found. "It was so funny watching people jumping over the cake," recalled Yasar Rana, who was part of the excited crowd that day. Filipino former expat Aguedo Escurel Marfori vividly remembered the festive atmosphere. "I walked all the way from Al Karama Souq to Dubai Creek just to get a taste. Those were the golden days of Dubai,” he said. This cake celebration was a reflection of the city’s rapidly growing prominence as a global hub, where even attempts at record-breaking feats became part of its charm. Although Dubai has since hosted several extravagant events, the 1996 cake remains a sweet memory for those who were there. The record-breaking dessert set the stage for future grand celebrations, such as the 2018 world-record attempt for the longest seafood boodle fight at Dubai Waterfront Market. The food standard was overseen by a team led by renowned Filipino chef Pablo "Boy" Logro, who prepared to serve up to 27,000 people. These unique celebrations are a testament to Dubai’s vibrant multiculturalism and its ability to unite people through shared experiences, whether with cakes or seafood.
