Dubai yard driving tests get fully automated

  DUBAI – Yard driving tests in Dubai are now fully automated, with cameras and sensors replacing instructors during the tests. The Roads and Transport Authority said on Monday (June 24) that the move is aimed at reducing the margin of error for pass and fail decisions. The yard test comprises of parallel parking, side parking, garage parking, hill driving and sudden braking. When taking this test, drivers will now be monitored by five cameras and more than 20 sensors as they carry out the five-point test. Four of these cameras will be fitted outside the testing vehicle, while one camera will be installed inside the car to verify the identity of the driver. To get a driving licence in Dubai, drivers need to pass three separate tests: theoretical knowledge test, yard test and road test. “The project aims to more transparency and reduce the error margin in making pass or fail decisions, in respect of the examinee, without human intervention,” said Khaled Alsalehi, director of drivers training and qualification in RTA’s Licensing Agency. “It also improves safety by using technology to avoid accidents,” he added.
