After five months of extensive maintenance, Dubai’s Al Maktoum Bridge, a critical connection between Bur Dubai and Deira, is set to fully reopen to traffic on January 16. This reopening marks the completion of a project aimed at enhancing the operational safety and longevity of Dubai’s oldest bridge, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The major bridge had undergone phased closures since September, including a full-day closure on Sundays and nightly shutdowns from Monday to Saturday. The closures, while necessary, had significantly impacted daily commutes, prompting motorists to rely on alternative routes like the Infinity Bridge, Al Shindagha Tunnel, and Business Bay Crossing. Al Maktoum Bridge, originally constructed in 1963, replaced the abra boats as the main mode of crossing the Dubai Creek. Over the decades, the bridge has facilitated millions of crossings, connecting Dubai’s historical and commercial hubs. “The maintenance work is crucial for ensuring that the bridge continues to meet modern safety and operational standards,” the RTA emphasized in a statement. “As Dubai grows, maintaining the structural integrity of key infrastructure like Al Maktoum Bridge is vital.” The bridge connects Bur Dubai, home to landmarks like the Dubai Frame and Karama, with Deira, known for attractions such as the Gold Souq and Clocktower. Its reopening is expected to restore smoother traffic flow between these bustling districts. In addition to reopening the bridge, the RTA plans to implement enhanced traffic management systems to optimize flow. These measures are expected to reduce bottlenecks and improve travel times, particularly during peak hours.
