New Dubai workout gets you cycling in water

  DUBAI - A new kind of fitness exercise has landed in Dubai and it is giving a whole new spin to workouts. What exactly is aquabiking? Basically you get waist-deep into a pool and onto a stationary bicycle and then pedal away, using water resistance to exercise. And there's a lot of benefits to be had, says Alicia Antonuccio, Aquaspin founder and the woman who brought the exercise to Dubai. "With normal cycling, you can lose up to 350 calories within 45 minutes. But with aquabiking you lose up to 800 calories for the same amount of time, plus you are defying gravity and not putting pressure on your joints because you are exercising in water," Antonuccio told ExpatMedia.Net. At Fairmont The Palm, Atonuccio's trademark Aquaspin classes are held in the resort hotel's outdoor private pool, treating participants to a fun workout. This is the first time that the outdoor aquabiking exercise is made available in Dubai, said Antonuccio. Antonuccio said she got hooked on aquabiking after it helped her recover from a sports injury. "I was very much into contact sports until I injured myself. My coach said that I needed to get some sort exercise that will put me back into shape without causing damage. I tried aquabiking and it worked," she said. The 26-year-old self-confessed "aquabiking addict" has put up her own aquabiking company, Aquaspin, based in Singapore and has worked with experts to develop a special workout maximizing the benefis of aquabiking. "It's rigorous workout that doesn't strain your muscles or your joints because you have water around you to support your weight. Basically you get a hydromassage that helps tone your muscles and reduce cellulite more effectively," she said. “The water cooling effect also reduces the discomfort of sweating whilst reducing pressure on the heart. So you don’t feel wiped out after your class,” Karima added.
