Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim tells Doha 'to stop lying'
DUBAI – Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim yesterday accused Qatar of lying and to stop "aligning itself with terrorists".
Tamim also criticized the Qatar-based Al Jazeera news organization of spreading fake or distorted news.
The Deputy Chairman of Police and Public Security made his tirade at the three-day Directorates and Media During Crises Forum that started yesterday . The forum is attended by 114 representatives of 14 countries.
Tamim said Qatar "aligned itself with terrorists and provided them with five star hotel accommodation", referring to Hamas officials.
Tamim emphasized in his speech that the UAE wants stability and security for its neighbors in the Gulf region and holds no ill will against any Gulf country, including Qatar.
"We only wish stability and security to Qatar. Some people think we are threatening the security and I say to them: 'Enough lying'," said Tamim.
The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt had cut diplomatic ties as well as land, sea and air links with Qatar for its alleged support to extremism.
Tamim said the "Qatar crisis is not a disaster but on a scale of one to seven, they have reached the sixth level."
With regard Saudi Arabia. Tamim recognized the kingdom for leading the Arab world in a unity mission and that the UAE is standing by Riyadh. "UAE stands with our brothers in Saudi Arabia as we believe in their message and leadership. The Kingdom is keen that the Arabic and Islamic nations be safe," he said.
Meanwhile, Tamim did not mince words in attacking Al Jazeera saying that the news organization has no credibility and would distort or fabricate stories, thus worsening tensions between Qatar and its neighbors.
Tamim said: "If Al Jazeera has credibility why don't they say anything about the news about the Iranian base in Doha? We heard about this news but we are not sure if it is true or false. Al Jazeera always claims that they are free and have credibility and efficiency. We said it's a boycott and they portray it as siege. This is slander."
Tamim pointed out that media work "is a two-edged sword, as it can be used for nation development purposes as well as for destruction."
He cited an article that said UAE hacked Qatar's news agency, which the UAE had denied. "Although Qatar accuses the UAE of hacking its news agency and the Washington Post has carried a story about it, the article said that there is no proof or evidence supporting those accusations," he said.
