Dubai duo loses $950,000 to 3 Ajman ‘magicians’ - ‘He told us jinns will return our money from the sky,’ Algerian victim tells court in Dubai

  DUBAI – Three Sudanese men who posed as magicians and conned two Algerians of $950,000 have been sentenced to two years in prison. The Dubai court also ordered each of them to pay a Dh10,000 fine. The trio will be deported after serving their jail sentence. The Algerian victims testified in court that they got acquainted with the trio after they discussed starting a sheep trading business. One of the Sudanese men, whom they met at his residence in Ajman, offered to help set up the business in exchange for $30,000. He also asked for another payment of $150,000, which the Algerians paid during a separate meeting in Dubai. The Algerians told the court that the Sudanese man also convinced them that they were under a magic spell and offered to cure them. He later told the duo that his other friend was the only one who could help them. The Algerians said they were treated for six months and had each paid the second man $200,000. When the second Sudanese man disappeared, their first Sudanese contact said another man from Sudan will come to continue the treatment. They were told “the new therapist will return our money by asking ‘jinns’ to bring them down from the sky,” one of the Algerians told the court.
