Durano on Camotes Island as pick-up point for drugs

  CEBU CITY – Is Camotes Island really a pick-up point for drugs in the Philippines? Representative Ramon Durano VI said rumours about the issue have circulated for years but have never been verified. "I've heard that the drug trade in Camotes was flourishing but it was not really confirmed," Durano said. A news report recently quoted Albuera town police Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido as saying that Camotes is a likely pick-up point because of the proximity of the island to mainland Cebu and the provinces of Bohol and Leyte. This claim, he added, came from those who were caught in buy bust operations of the police, pointing the island as their pick-up point. Durano himself admitted that security is “non-existent” for those travelling to the island from Cebu either by ferry or ship. Taking a ship from Danao City, Cebu is one of the popular ways locals travel to Camotes, but the port there does not have an x-ray machine or police dogs. Passengers only need to present their tickets in order to board the boat without having their luggage inspected. Durano said it would be ideal for the port authority to place an x-ray machine or police dogs there to help detect passengers carrying illegal items. But Cebu Port Authority (CPA) general manager Edmund Tan told Cebu Daily News that they still needed to procure an x-ray machine there. "We are just constraint with procurement laws that's why it is taking quite long," Tan said. Presently, there are four security personnel and one port police assigned there. Tan said they inspect passengers and their baggage but they do not do it frequently since their main directive is to secure port facilities.
