Duterte calls off ceasefire with Philippine communist rebels and says peace with insurgents 'not possible in our generation'

MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte lifted a unilateral ceasefire with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) because of "impossible demands" and recent attacks on government troops. The CPP-NPA, for its part, also canceled its ceasefire with the Duterte administration as it accused the government of reneging on its promise to release political detainees and that the military violated the truce. Duterte announced the lifting of the ceasefire with the communist rebels during the inauguration yesterday of an irrigation project in Mlang town in North Cotabato province in Mindanao. "I am asking the soldiers, go back to your camps, clean your rifles and be ready to fight," said Duterte. Dutete said the CPP wanted him to release 400 political prisoners but doing so would require general amnesty which the President aid he cannot decide on his own. "It's just too huge that it is impossible to meet or even work out a compromise," he added. He also said he already conceded by releasing detained rebel leaders so they could participate in the ongoing peace talks between the government and the CPP in Oslo, Norway. The peace talks started in August last year. Duterte did not say if he will call off the peace negotiations that was aimed at ending 50 years of insurgency in the Philippines. "If it won't end, then OK, but let it not be said that I did not try. I guess that peace with the communists cannot be realized during our generation," he said. Duterte also mentioned attacks by communist rebels on soldiers recently, killing a total of six troopers. The rebels also abducted two soldiers.
