Duterte issues warning after Facebook closes 115 accounts

  MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte urged Facebook for talks after the social media giant shut down 115 accounts and other pages seen as supportive of the government. Facebook said 115 accounts, 11 pages, nine groups and six Instagram accounts were removed for “violating our policy against foreign or government interference which is coordinated inauthentic behavior on behalf of a foreign or government entity.” One of the accounts that were removed was the Hands Off Our Children page, which is used by parents to find their children recruited by the leftist New People’s Army. Facebook also removed the personal account of its administrator, Captain Alexandre Cabales, chief of the social media centre of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Facebook removed advocacy pages. “Those are not maintained by the government. They are helping the advocacy of the government,” Roque explained. The removal of the accounts had incensed Duterte, who issued a veiled warning to Facebook on Monday. “Facebook, listen to me. We allow you to operate here hoping that you could help us also. Now if government cannot advocate something which is for the good of the people then what is your purpose here in my country?” Duterte said, “What will be the point of allowing you to continue if you can not help us? The Philippine leader called on Facebook for a dialogue to resolved the issue. “My job is to protect government interest. It’s not anybody’s job… If you cannot help me protect government interest then let us talk. We may or we may not find the solution. If we cannot, then I am sorry,” Duterte said. Facebook Philippines spokesperson Michelle Fojas, in a statement to media, said there is “nothing further to add to the FB Newsroom announcement” on the matter.
