President says Church leaders should convince drug suspects to reform

  DAVAO CITY – President Rodrigo Duterte appealed to the Catholic Church in the Philippines to help prevent bloodshed in his administration's much-criticized war against illegal drugs by convincing those involved in the drug trade and use illegal drugs to reform as a "preemptive measure". Duterte said during a dinner on Sunday with journalists here that he will furnish Church leaders with a list of drug suspects soon. He said Church leaders and members of the clergy could reach out and talk to the drug suspects "to tell them that they (drug suspects) could end up in a very serious situation if they continue with their involvement in the drug trade." Duterte pointed out that priests "easily condemn" his war on drugs called "Oplan Tokhang (Double Barrel) but did nothing to help address the problem. So far, thousands of drug suspects have either been killed in police operations or by vigilantes. Foreign and local human rights groups, critics of the Duterte administration and other countries have slammed the conduct of the anti-drug operations. Meanwhile, Duterte also asked Church leader to talk to barangay (village) chiefs as he pointed out that the leaders of the small government units in the country are not in the frontline of Oplan Tokhang because, according to him, "40 percent of them are involved in drugs." "You see? That's how serious the problem is. We are now a narcostate. You ask why I did not tap the barangay captains (village chiefs)? I cannot trust the idiots anymore," he said. He reiterated that his order to the police and military to destroy drug factories and run after drug suspects does not include killing them.
