Duterte to double soldiers’ salaries by December

  CEBU CITY – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte received a loud applause from soldiers listening to him at Central Command (CENTCOM) after he announced that their salaries would be doubled by December this year. During his "Talk to Men" with close to 300 soldiers in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Cebu on Friday (August 5), Duterte said he wants to put them in priority. "Uunahin ko kayo (I will put you first)," he said. Aside from announcing the increase in salaries, Duterte announced the new equipment that he will be giving to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center. This includes gamma x-ray, high-pressure oxygen chamber, and a machine for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He also mentioned the construction of a new building for the AFP Medical Center, adding that they may repurpose the old building. Duterte said he is not asking for anything in return from the soldiers. "I do not need your personal loyalty. Just love your country and obey the constitution," he added. Duterte asked the military to have space in their camp for drug rehabilitation centers. Duterte arrived three hours after his scheduled 4:15 p.m. arrival at Centcom headquarters in Camp Lapu-Lapu on board a helicopter that landed at the camp's grandstand area. He landed at nearly 7 p.m. at Mactan Air Base on board a private plane from his camp visit in Camp Macario Peralta in Jamindan, Capiz.
