Duterte issues strongest statement yet on extrajudicial killings; president to shoot down cops, soldiers who kill innocent civilians

  MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has reiterated that his administration is not involved in the extrajudicial killing of drug pushers and users as he warned policemen and soldiers not to kill innocent civilians in the ongoing drive against illegal drugs in the country otherwise he will shoot them down. Duterte issued the statement during the awarding of 2016 The Outstanding Young Men and Women in Malacanang on Monday. He also responded to critics who portray him as a killer for allegedly backing the summary killings, saying "I am not a killer. I do not relish or enjoy (seeing) a Filipino sprawled there with all the blood." "With regard to the killing of persons on bended (sic) knees, with hands tied behind their back, that's not ours. Will that make you a better soldier or policeman? If they do that, I'll shoot them," he added. With regard corpses of alleged drug pushers and users found with their heads or bodies wrapped in plastic or masking tape, the Philippine president emphasized that his administration did not kill them. "Hindi kami gumagawa ng mummy. Hindi ito Egypt (We don't make mummies. This is not Egypt)," Duterte said. Duterte said he is willing to "sacrifice" just to rid the country of the drug menace and that criticism of his bloody drug war is part of the territory. Critics of Duterte here and abroad have lambasted his administration for the bloody campaign against illegal drugs that has resulted in nearly 6,000 deaths.
