Duterte makes surprise visit to Filipino community in Laos

  VIENTIANE, LAOS – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte made a surprise visit to the Filipino Community (FilCom) gathering at the Feuangfar Center shortly after he landed in Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Laos on Monday (September 5) for the Asean Summit. It was a welcome surprise for the Filipino community, who spent months preparing for the visit but were told by officials a day before Duterte’s arrival in Laos that the president was unlikely to make it to the FilCom event due to pressing issues following the recent bombing in Davao City that killed 14 people. “Despite of the bombing in Davao, I had to go here. Why? To show that they cannot ask us to bend to their needs,” Duterte said, referring to the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf that claimed responsibility for Friday’s bombing in Davao City’s night market. Duterte had imposed a state of lawlessness in the country after the attack. Duterte promised a “reckoning” and change. “Just give me time and I will fix the country,” he told the gathering at Feuangfar Center. Duterte was met with cheers and hugs as excited supporters gathered around to take photos with him. Even Filipinos who waited for him outside the center, doing their visa runs from Thailand to Laos, got to meet Duterte, who went out of his way to approach them. Duterte arrived in Laos with members of the cabinet and undersecretaries, led by Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay, Jr. and Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez. Duterte thanked the government of Laos for being a good host to the Filipino community here. There are 1,700 Filipinos working in Laos, many working as engineers, service industry professionals and teachers. “I promise you there will be a clean government,” he said amid applause and cheers from the crowd, assuring Filipinos “whether you are in or out of the country” that when they go back to the Philippines they will see a cleaner system of government. “As a Filipino citizen you will be accorded the respect and dignity,” he told overseas Filipino workers. He also said there will be a “continuing purge for a cleaner government”, pointing out that he has already forced many corrupt officials in agencies like the Land Transportation Office to resign. The event was graced by Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo and National Youth Commission Chairman Aiza Seguerra, who performed at the event. Taguiwalo, in her speech, announced the expansion of the Conditional Cash Transfer to include a provision of 20 kilos of rice per month and a monthly pension of five hundred pesos for senior citizens.
