Evasco takes over as chairperson of Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council

  MANILA – While saying he accepts "with a heavy heart" the resignation of Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo as housing agency chairperson, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed rightr away Robredo's replacement. Cabinet Secretary Leoncio "Jun" Evasco Jr. was named by Duterte as the new head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC). Evasco was the one who relayed to Robredo a directive from Duterte for her to stop attending Cabinet meetings effective Monday "due to irreconcilable differences", apparently stemming from Robredo's vocal opposition to Duterte's bloody war against illegal drugs and the burial of the late deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Heroes Cemetery last month, which Duterte had promised to the Marcoses. Evasco defended Duterte's order saying it is the prerogative of the President to withdraw appointments to the Cabinet. "Cabinet members are personally appointed by the President; and it is also his prerogative to withdraw the same for reasons known only to him. Cabinet members accept the appointment with the implicit agreement that they agree with his program, platform and policies," Evasco said in a press statement. Aside from Robredo, Duterte also told Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairwoman Patricia Licuanan not to attend the Cabinet meetings anymore. Licuanan is an appointee of former President Benigno Aquino III. Licuanan earlier said she will comply with Duterte's order but she will not step down from her post since her term of office ends in 2018 yet as mandated by law. In the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree at the Malacanang Palace grounds on Monday night, Duterte did not mention anything about Robredo's resignation but in apparent reference to the opposition which Robredo will now lead, Duterte said "just wait...you had your days." Robredo earlier said Duterte's move was part of a plot to oust her from the vice presidency to pave the way for the assumption of Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to the post.
