Duterte confirms Sara-Go tandem in 2022 after announcing his retirement from politics

  MANILA – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go are tipped to run as a tandem in the 2022 national elections. "That's a Sara-Go (It's a Sara-Go tandem)," Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte confirmed on the sidelines of his announcement on Saturday (October 2) of his retirement from politics. Go filed his certificate of candidacy to replace the Duterte as Vice Presidential candidate of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban). Duterte’s announcement of retirement from politics paves the way for a possible presidential run by his daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. Duterte confirmed that Duterte-Carpio will pursue the presidency next year. This came after the Davao City mayor filed her candidacy for reelection in the 2022 polls. "I have been honored with the gift of trust and respect of many of our fellow Filipinos. Thank you to everyone who has expressed their support. Many of you do not know me and yet you carry me over your shoulders," Duterte-Carpio said. "Like the other millions of Filipinos, I share with you the same goal of living a peaceful and prosperous life in our country, today and in the many years to come. I call on everyone to work together for an honest, orderly, and credible election in May 2022," she added. Duterte-Caprio has said she will not be running for a higher position. However, it remains to be seen whether she will reconsider after her father, whose term ends in 2022, announced his retirement from politics. "In obedience to the will of the people, I now say to my countrymen, I will follow what you want. Today, I announce my retirement from politics," Duterte said on Saturday.
