Philippines' Duterte tells energy regulatory execs to resign over 'rampant corruption' in the ERC office
LIMA, Peru – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte called on officials of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to resign following reports of rampant corruption in the office.
Duterte, who is in Lima, Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit being hosted by the South American country this year, made the call after receiving reports of rampant corruption in the ERC. An executive of the agency allegedly killed himself due to pressure to approve alleged anomalous procurement contracts of the office.
Duterte said the officials concerned sullied the ERC. "Binaboy nila yung agency," he remarked. His statement came after ERC biddings chairman Francisco Villar Jr. allegedly committed suicide and claimed in three suicide letters that he was allegedly pressured by his superiors to approve anomalous transactions.
Villa is the brother of broadcast journalist Charie Villa.
Speaking to reporters in Peru, Duterte said he will ask Congress either put the budget of the ERC on hold or abolish it. Charges will also be filed the officials involved in corruption in the agency, he added.
