Duterte threatens to kill human rights activists, criticises statement of ICC he can be charged for bloody drive

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he will kill human rights activists who have criticized his bloody campaign against illegal drugs since he took office last June that has been blamed for the 2,500 deaths. Duterte, in a speech on Monday in Malacanang Palace during an inaugural switch-on of a coal-fired power plant, said in Filipino "the human rights (defenders) said I ordered the killings. I told them 'OK. Let's stop. We'll let them (drug users) multiply so that when it's harvest time, more people will die. I will include you because you are the reason why their numbers swell." Records showed that 2,500 people have been killed in anti-drug operations of the police since Duterte assumed the presidency last June 30 and another 2,500 have been killed by alleged vigilantes. Duterte also lambasted the International Criminal Court (ICC) for threatening to charge and jail him for the drug-related killings. He described the threat as "bullshit." The ICC earlier said it has jurisdiction over the matter and has the authority to prosecute those involved in the extrajudicial killings for violating the human rights of the slain alleged drug pushers and users. The US, European Union and United Nations had been critical of the anti-drug operations of the Duterte administration. Duterte shrugged off the criticism and even cussed at the EU, US and UN. Meanwhile, Duterte presented a compilation of documents that had the name of 5,000 local officials involved in the drug trade. He said the officials concerned were engaged in the illicit business because it was "easy to earn money."
