Philippine President meets with Congress leaders to discuss terror plots

  MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte hastily called leaders of Congress to a meeting in Malacañang Palace on Tuesday and informed them that three areas in Mindanao are "under threat" of a terror attack, an official said. "They discovered new plans of terrorists in other areas in Mindanao. He wants us posted on developments. From what I understand, around three areas are under threat," said Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III in a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Sotto, however, did not identify the three areas as he explained that he'd rather let the President divulge the information because he is not authorized to do so. Sotto said Duterte did not ask for help to address the terror plots but told them that he has sought 20,000 additional military personnel from the Armed Forces. Congress approved last month an extension of Martial Law on Mindanao until the end of the year amid military operations against local Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorists who raided and took hold of Marawi City last May 23. The attack on the western Mindanao city had prompted Duterte to declare military rule on the second biggest island of the Philippine archipelago. The Constitution prescribes a 60-day limit on Martial Law that ended on July 22. On that day, Congress held a special session and approved Duterte's request for an extension of Martial Law. Military operations against the Marawi attackers have been going on for more than two months.
