President says he still trusts dela Rosa, wants police officer to continue leading anti-drug campaign

  MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte outrightly rejected a call for Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald dela Rosa to resign following the involvement of policemen in the abduction and murder of a South Korean businessman. During dela Rosa's birthday celebration at the PNP headquarters yesterday, Duterte said: "He (dela Rosa) stays as chief of police. Bato (dela Rosa's nickname) has my complete trust." Dela Rosa is from Duterte's bailiwick - Davao City. This, as Senator Panfilo Lacson, a former PNP chief during the term of President Joseph Estrada, advised dela Rosa to rid the police organization of rogue policemen and limit his extracurricular activities -- referring to dela Rosa's recent attendance of a rock concert against illegal drugs and at a concert by American singer Bryan Adams. House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, a staunch ally of Duterte, earlier called on dela Rosa to resign following the grisly murder of South Korean business Jee Ick Joo in October last year. Investigations showed that Jee and the female helper were abducted by policemen in the guise of a drug raid on the foreigner's home in Angeles City in Pampanga province located north of Manila in October last year. The helper was allowed to go free but Jee was brought to the PNP headquarters - Camp Crame - where he was strangled to death and his body was cremated in a facility owned by a former police official. Jee's ashes were flushed down a toilet bowl. Jee was killed even if his wife paid 5 million pesos in exchange for Jee's freedom. Dela Rosa earlier described calls for him to resign as "cruel" and said he has not been remiss in his job. Meanwhile, Duterte said he cannot let dela Rosa go as he has put dela Rosa in complete charge of the government's campaign against illegal drugs that had been criticized by the opposition in the Philippines and by other countries due to human rights violations. More than 7,000 drug pushes and users have been slain in legitimate police operations or by vigilantes since the drug war started when Duterte assumed office. Lacson, for his part, said dela Rosa should deal with rogue policemen. He warned that policemen might not take dela Rosa seriously because of the police official's carefree ways.
