Duterte's ex-wife sees ‘awkward’ time with Avancena at inaugural

  MANILA – The ex-wife of Philippine president-elect Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday (June 23) expressed apprehension about meeting Duterte’s long-time partner, Honeylet Avancena, at his inauguration. Duterte will take his oath as president on June 30 and Elizabeth Zimmerman said she expects “so many things. Maybe some awkward situations”. When asked if she was talking about the possibility of meeting Avancena at the inauguration, Zimmerman answered with a grimace. “Yes. I think so. That’s why there would be an awkward situation,” she told Rappler in an impromptu interview. How would she react next to Avancena at Duterte’s presidential inauguration? “I cannot answer that but maybe I will ask somebody from the PMS (Presidential Management Staff) that we go separately. We go separately with my children and my grand children,” she said. Zimmerman had been married to Duterte for 27 years before their marriage was annulled in 2000. The two remain good friends, with Duterte skipping his schedules in Manila last year to visit Zimmerman at a Davao hospital where she was receiving treatment for breast cancer and then delaying a scheduled talk on his presidential campaign in April this year to attend Zimmerman's 68th birthday. In the run-up to the May elections, Zimmerman postponed her radiotherapy sessions to help campaign for Duterte along with their three children—Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, and Sebastian Duterte. On Thursday, Zimmerman told reporters that she only has good wishes for Duterte. “I wish him good luck and I am also very happy for him. He can give legacy to my children and also to the people. To our country,” she said.
