Will e-scooters soon have number plates? This proposal was floated at a recent traffic safety meeting between the public and Dubai Police.
In Dubai, e-scooter riders are required to register for a free permit from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in order to use their transport on designated roads. Motorists with a driving license do not need to apply for an e-scooter permit.

At the recent community meeting with Dubai Police, Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, said registering e-scooters might help lessen accident risks involving e-scooters, according to Khaleej Times.
Edelmann said registering e-scooters will help quickly identify the rider as well as the e-scooter, and help raise awareness about safe driving in the emirate, with authorities able to monitor and enforce regulations involving parking, speeding and others.
According to Dubai Police, some of the most common violations involve not wearing a helmet, carrying a passenger and driving past the 60km/hr speed limit. In a previous Expat Media report, residents have complained about reckless riders bumping into pedestrians or not giving way to commuters at Dubai Metro stations.
Since March 1, the RTA banned the use of e-scooters at Dubai Metro and trams, citing safety reasons. The RTA said that e-scooters will still be allowed across the footbridge as long as it is folded.
The ban came after an e-scooter billowed out smoke and caused long delays at Onpassive Metro Station early this year. ICA/Expat Media
