The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD) has initiated a nationwide survey on UAE youths' attitudes toward climate change. The EAD Youth Survey on Climate Change will poll 10,000 young people aged 15 to 29 across the seven emirates to gauge their sentiments and perspectives on the most pressing environmental issues and the effects of climate change. The survey comes as the UAE prepares to participate in Cop27 next month. The results will be published during the same month to coincide with the climate change event in Egypt and 12 months before the UAE hosts Cop28 at Expo City Dubai. The survey will assess young people's environmental attitudes and behaviors and their beliefs in personal ecological responsibility, conservation behavior, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. It will also assess the impact of recent single-use plastic policies on the habits of young people. Abu Dhabi banned single-use plastic bags on June 1, and Dubai imposed a 25 fils tax on their use on July 1. Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri, secretary general of EAD, stated that it is critical to listen to and include young voices in decision-making when addressing climate change. "Young people are the future, and they will have to deal with the effects of climate change, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and environmental threats," she said. "Young people are the future and will have to deal with the consequences of climate change, food insecurity, biodiversity loss and threats to our environment," she said. To increase participation in the survey, EAD will work through its youth engagement platforms, such as the Sustainable Schools Initiative, which has a network of 153 schools, and the Sustainable Campus Initiative, which has 24 active universities and reaches over 500,000 students.
