Dubai is set to introduce another groundbreaking transportation system with the launch of the Dubai Loop, an underground transport project announced by tech billionaire Elon Musk. The project will connect key areas of the emirate through a high-speed tunnel network, promising faster, safer, and more efficient commutes. Musk made the announcement virtually at the World Governments Summit 2025 on Thursday (February 13), in a session with Omar Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications. The two discussed how the Dubai Loop would reshape the city's transport landscape. “It will be like a wormhole,” Musk said. “Like, you just wormhole from one part of the city and boom you're out in another part of the city. I think once people try it out, they will think this is really cool.” The Dubai Loop is a collaborative project between Musk’s Boring Company and Dubai authorities. While specific details remain under wraps, the system is expected to cover densely populated districts, providing quick, seamless transport between major hubs. “The goal is to cover Dubai's most densely populated areas for people to go from point to point,” Al Olama explained. “We’re taking a step forward in transforming urban mobility.” Musk’s Boring Company previously built a similar Loop system in Las Vegas, where Tesla vehicles transport passengers through narrow, one-way tunnels. In Las Vegas, the system has four stops, with an eight-kilometer ride costing $10 and taking just five minutes. According to Musk, tunnels offer several advantages over traditional road and air transport. “What's really useful about tunnels is alleviating traffic in congested areas. In Las Vegas, we're busy connecting the whole city with all the big hotels, the convention center, and the airport,” he said. He dismissed the notion of using flying taxis as an alternative, citing noise, wind disturbances, and safety risks. “Flying things tend to crash once in a while,” he said. “If you have bad weather, like a sandstorm or blizzard, transport shuts down. None of these problems exist with underground travel.” Musk also emphasized the structural safety of tunnels, particularly in seismic conditions. “Tunnels are actually one of the safest places to be during an earthquake,” he noted. With Dubai's growing population and increasing traffic congestion, the Loop project is seen as a timely addition to the city’s transport infrastructure.
